2013 Honda Civic vs 2013 Nissan Sentra

Civic vs. Sentra11
By Sami Haj-Assaad, April 16 2013. Photos and Video by Adam Wood and Chris Blanchette

With so many strong competitors in the compact car segment, two long-time Japanese rivals from Honda and Nissan are re-thinking their approach. For 2013 the Honda Civic gets a significant refresh, sporting better driving dynamics and more creature comforts, while the Nissan Sentra has undergone a major makeover, with a stylish new body and an impressive amount of new technology.

So which approach to the compact car segment is more successful? Is the all-new Sentra with its attractive new looks and show-off features the best bet, or is it the Civic with its inner beauty?

MODERN SENTRA OR CLASSIC CIVIC

Civic vs. Sentra8

There’s no denying the fact that the old Sentra had very little sex appeal, with its chunky, boxy exterior styling and cheapo-plastic looking interior. However for 2013 the Sentra looks fresh from a shopping spree at the South Coast Plaza, featuring gorgeous LED lights, 17-inch rims and chrome accents that really compliment the new, curvaceous design of the car. Of course there are a few extras that are part of the SL trim, which bumps the Sentra’s $15,990 base price to $19,820 before additional packages. While base models retain the LED headlights, they don’t have the side view mirrors with integrated turn signals, or fog lights, which give the Sentra a more grown up look.

Civic vs. Sentra12

The Civic, on the other hand, is a well-proportioned, retaining its classic, if a little boring design. The front and rear fasciae have been refreshed for a more modern and cohesive Honda brand image. Without a doubt, the new Civic looks closer to its Accord sibling, which is a good thing. Our model, the high-end EX-L with Navigation, costs $23,765, and comes with pretty alloy-wheels (which were upgraded to 17s) and fog-lights over the base $18,165 Honda Civic LX.

PACKED TO THE WHEEL-WELLS

On the inside is where the story changes. Here the Civic looks like the more premium car, thanks to better materials and fabrics. It’s also a more cohesive package, with the Senta’s cabin falling short of its stylish exterior.

As part of the EX-L with Navigation package, the Civic sports comfortable black leather seats and is loaded with convenience features like seat warmers, auto-on/off headlights, a moon-roof, automatic climate control and leather wrapped interior trimmings. Honda also includes three different displays in the Civic, which can lead to a bit of an information overload. In front is a digital speedometer with Eco-Assist, showing two bars that change colors depending on your driving habits. To the right of that screen is Honda’s i-MID display, which should be easily recognizable to anyone who has been in a Honda before.

Finally, there’s the navigation screen, which utilizes both touch and knob based controls. In comparison to the Sentra’s touch-screen, the Honda system was less intuitive thanks to tiny on-screen buttons. We also found it a touch slower, and far more difficult to pair a phone to.

Civic vs. Sentra5
All the controls on the dash are on an angle, facing towards the driver. While this is a nice touch for the person behind the wheel, it’s a bit annoying if you’re the passenger.

There’s just as much tech and conveniences in the Sentra, meaning you’ll find seat warmers, navigation and eco-driving coaches, and they all work just as well as in the Civic. Unique to the Sentra are features like dual-zone climate control and push-button start, two options that are usually saved for bigger, more expensive cars. Unfortunately, the interior design of the Sentra is drab, if not downright uninspired. With fake-wood trimmings this cabin would make drying paint yawn.
What the Sentra’s interior does boast are some sizable dimensions. It sports about an inch more headroom in the front than the Civic, and half an inch more legroom in the rear. The Sentra also has more than two cubic-feet more cargo space in the trunk than the Civic.

ROAD TEST SEALS THE DEAL

Civic vs. Sentra7
Without a doubt, the Honda boasts more refined driving and handling dynamics. Despite being ‘just’ a refresh, the 2013 Civic has a significant amount of changes with its steering and handling, which feels much tighter this time around.

As for the engine and throttle, compared to the Sentra, the Civic feels far more responsive and easily drops gears to help get the car up to speed. That is, until the ‘Econ’ mode is activated, which significantly dulls the experience.

Leading the compact field in terms of offering variable driving modes, Nissan has equipped the Sentra with three unique settings: Normal, Eco and Sport. Adjusting the behaviour of the CVT in the sport mode the Sentra feels a bit quicker off the line than the Civic but the responsiveness is short-lived. In ‘Eco’ mode, the car always feels like it’s always a gear higher than it should be, limiting acceleration, but helping to get better fuel economy.

Compare Specs

2013 Honda Civic
vs
2013 Nissan Sentra
Vehicle 2013 Honda Civic Advantage 2013 Nissan Sentra
Engine 1.8L - 1.8L
Horsepower 140 hp Civic 130 hp

Rear Leg Room 36.2 in. Sentra 37.4 in.
Starting Price $18,165 Sentra $15,990
As Tested Price $26,118 Sentra $23,490

Overall, the Civic ceded the fuel-economy war to the Sentra, which is more frugal with its fuel. Rated at 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway the Civic comes up slightly short of the Sentra on paper with a 30/39 mpg rating. This held true in real-world testing. Tested in cold temperatures and with plenty of hard city driving our numbers came well short of advertised for both models, though reflected the Sentra’s city advantage with 27 mpg average for the Civic and 29 for the Sentra.
Netting two miles per gallon more than the Civic, the Sentra’s CVT is both its saviour and its downfall. Yes, the CVT was to blame for its bizarre throttle response, and can be extremely loud when passing someone, but it’s very efficient, helping the Nissan go further on a single tank. Thankfully, on the highway the Sentra’s cabin quiets down, though due to extensive sound deadening the Civic is quieter overall.

THE VERDICT

Civic vs. Sentra9
These two compacts contrast each other from the very start. As a refreshed model, the 2013 Civic sports some much needed tweaks, putting it back competing at the top in the small car segment. In comparison, the Sentra is more affordable, more attractive and returns better fuel economy numbers, all while sporting some new tech and convenience features.

Still, we found the Civic a more refined vehicle, due almost entirely to its early refresh. Boasting all the usual Civic qualities while adding in improved driving dynamics and interior quality it’s an easy pick in this comparison.

The move by Honda to tighten the screws on its popular compact proved to be a shrewd one. In fact, we suggest Nissan do the same.

Car Care Tip of the Week: Don't forget to check tire tread and pressure!

Neglecting your tires and letting them become under inflated can lead to tire failure and other issues. At least once a month, make a point to check the pressure in all of your tires using a tire gauge. If your tires need more air, fill them up to the correct psi for your vehicle. If you don’t know your vehicle’s psi, you can find this number on the tire’s information label located on the driver’s side doorjamb or in your owner’s manual.

2014 Honda Odyssey gets some tidy tweaks

In New York, Honda is offering up a refreshed version of its well-liked Odyssey minivan, bringing with it a slew of updates including the segment's first in-car vacuum. It looks to be a neat little feature, one that families will no doubt get a lot of use out of. Kids are spill-machines, after all.

On the outside, the Odyssey gets a revised front end with dark headlamp surrounds, shiny cross-bars in the grille, and an aluminum hood and bumper. We think the blacked-out grille trim looks fine on this charcoal model, but question how smart it will look on models with lighter paint tones. Out back, there are new LED taillamps, and it looks like a new wheel design will be on offer, too.

Other changes for the 2014 Odyssey include some structural reinforcements for improved safety and some new available nannies like lane-departure warning and forward collision warning. Inside, buyers will find new finishes inside the cabin, a redesigned center stack and pushbutton start.

Kudos to Don for this humbling review of your customer service!

"We can't thank DON WHELAN enough for helping us out this past week.  He's a low-pressure,friendly, resourceful, positive energy guy.  We were in a jam and he helped us look outside the box.  We have gone to the same dealership twice in the past year, only to leave frustrated by not only sales people but managers as well.  Don was incredible; he spent hours helping us find the right vehicle. He didn't give up. He is patient and thoughtful of others needs.  Yes, that's right, I said thoughtful!   I really didn't think we'd buy another Honda until we met him!  Thanks Don!  It's truly an honor to have worked with you. You're honesty, integrity, and attentiveness to our situation were a blessing!  Thanks for not trying to talk us into anything we wouldn't have been happy with!  Go Don - YOU ROCK!   Good things happen to good people, and you are definitely one of them! So if you want to buy a car and want a GREAT experience, ask for DON WHELAN!" - William R.

Honda Civic Tourer images arrive early on web!

Honda provided a teaser sketch of its Civic Tourer concept wagon about a month ago, but today, just a couple days before its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show, we've found these official pics of the car in question from WhatCar?

The Civic Tourer concept adds a little length and height to the current Civic hatchback sold in Europe, stretching the shape every which way to make a new wagon model that will compete with cars like the new Volkswagen Golf Variant, which is also making its debut in Geneva this week.

As we mentioned when Honda released the teaser sketch last month, the European Civic is different from the Civic sold here in the US, so the production version of this concept, which should debut in the fall, will never see the inside of a dealership in the States. Do you care, or does the smaller Fit fill that role well enough for Americans?

Hey, fans! Here's your weekly car care tip: Roll 'Em Up!

Nixing the AC lowers fuel consumption, but only if you're not driving on the highway. Otherwise, opening the windows uses more gas because of the drag you're putting on the car. Instead, run your AC in recirculation mode, which recycles some already-cooled air from inside the car, requiring less energy than completely cooling the air that comes in from outside.

Honda Fit Wins Two Awards From U.S. News & World Report

Honda-fit

The 2013 Honda Fit has won two U.S. News & World Report "Best Cars for the Money" awards. The highly-versatile and fun-to-drive Fit was named "Best Subcompact for the Money" and "Best Hatchback for the Money" among 2013 vehicles sold in the United States.

"The Fit brings truth to the concept that big things can come in small packages," said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "With an amazingly roomy interior, snappy styling, great driving dynamics and industry-leading Honda quality, Fit proves that small cars can provide value well beyond their size."

The "Best Cars for the Money" methodology combines quality and value data into a composite score. Within each of 21 award categories, the vehicle with the highest score is named the "Best Car for the Money" in that category. Quality is measured by the overall score a vehicle achieved in the U.S. News car rankings at the time the awards are published. The rankings, updated monthly at www.usnews.com/cars, compare cars on the basis of safety, reliability and a consensus of industry experts' opinions. Value is measured by a combination of a vehicle's five-year total cost of ownership and the average price paid for the vehicle at the time the awards are published.

Winner of multiple industry awards due to its class-leading safety scores, fuel economy ratings, versatility, residual value and overall excellence, the Honda Fit has built a loyal following over seven years and two generations. The 2013 Honda Fit earned a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), received a 2013 Residual Value Award from ALG and a 2013 Best Resale Value Award from KBB.com; was recognized as a "greener choice of 2013" by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE); and Fit is a seven-time Car and Driver magazine "10Best Cars" award winner.

Though the Fit has an overall exterior length of just 161.6 inches, a surprisingly roomy and versatile interior provides an impressive 90.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. There's comfortable seating for up to five passengers, and behind the rear seats, there's 20.6 cubic feet of storage space - much more than you'd find in a typical sedan.

For enhanced versatility, the exclusive 60/40 split rear Magic Seat® offers multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. With its one-motion dive-down functionality, it can fold flat into the floor to provide a maximum 57.3 cu-ft. of rear cargo volume. Compared to any other vehicle in the subcompact class, the five-passenger Fit provides the lowest, flattest cargo floor and the most cargo volume. The Fit's interior thus can easily be converted to tall-object mode or long-object mode based on the shape of the cargo.

Standard comfort and convenience features include air conditioning, cruise control, remote entry, a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers, a USB audio interface3, an auxiliary audio input jack, MP3/WMA playback capability, Radio Data System (RDS), power windows, power mirrors, power door locks and a security system.

Honda Expands Fit EV Leasing to Select East Coast Markets

Honda_fit_ev

The all-electric 2013 Honda Fit EV, first launched in California and Oregon in July 2012, is coming to select East Coast markets later this month, American Honda announced today. The Fit EV will be available for lease at Honda dealerships in selected markets in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. Customers will be able to lease the ultra-efficient, spacious and fun-to-drive Fit EV for a period of three years at a cost of $389 per month.

The 2013 Honda Fit EV, part of Honda's diverse portfolio of alternative-fuel vehicles, has a combined adjusted Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mile-per-gallon-equivalency rating of 118 MPGe, an EPA-rated driving range of 82 miles, and a low energy-consumption rating of just 29 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 miles.

"Expanding the availability of the ultra-efficient Fit EV to the East Coast is the next logical step in Honda's strategic and customer-focused approach to growing the market for low-CO2, sustainable mobility technologies," said Steve Center, vice president of the American Honda Environmental Business Development Office. "Combining Honda's extensive EV experience with customers–which began 15 years ago with the Honda EV Plus–with the real-world feedback from early Fit EV lessees in several different markets will help us prepare for growing adoption of electric vehicles."

Based on the award-winning five-door, five-passenger Honda Fit, the 100-percent electric Fit EV features a 20-kilowatt-hour (kWh) Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery and a compact 92-kilowatt (123 horsepower) AC synchronous electric motor that generates 189 ft-lb of torque. This efficient powertrain is teamed to a chassis with a fully-independent suspension and a driver-selectable 3-mode drive system. The result is a fun-to-drive EV with an EPA combined city/highway estimated driving range rating of 82-miles.

An onboard charger allows the vehicle to be plugged into any household-type 120-volt outlet (dedicated GFCI outlet recommended) or an available 240-volt AC power supply. When connected to a 240-volt circuit, the Fit EV battery can be recharged in less than three hours from a low charge indicator illumination point. When connected to an outlet, charging can be started or stopped with an included Fit EV interactive remote control, through an available smartphone application or through the internet on a personal computer.

Honda and Acura to Offer Convenience of Apple's Siri™ Eyes Free on Select 2013 Vehicles

American Honda today announced it will integrate support for Siri, the intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking, into its 2013 Honda Accord and Acura RDX and ILX models as a dealer installed option. Later this year, owners with a compatible iPhone1 running iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they safely keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. "iPhone has become so integral to people's lives that they continue to use them in their vehicles," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of automobile product planning, American Honda. "Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Free mode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer's ever-changing needs."

Honda recognizes the power of Siri and Eyes Free mode as an in-vehicle tool that will help meet the connectivity and convenience needs of its customers in a responsible manner. Honda has reengineered its software to seamlessly integrate Siri Eyes Free mode into its Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® via the onboard microphone and speakers.

Five-Point Inspection: 2013 Honda CR-V LX

The all-new CR-V isn’t packing a drastic update, but still maintains a lot of family friendly features which go great with its $22,795 starting price. Add AWD, like our LX tester was equipped with, and the CR-V costs $24,045.

Powered by a responsive 2.4L four-cylinder engine, the CR-V puts out 185 hp. If driving around town, you won’t need all that power, so fortunately Honda equips the CR-V with an ECON button, which dulls throttle response in favor of fuel-savings.
The results are pretty impressive. The CR-V earned 27 mpg during our time with it, which included a mix of both highway driving and city driving. This is slightly better than the EPA rating of 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

Simplicity is an underrated feature in cars these days. With the CR-V, all the essential buttons, controls and information are laid out in front of you in an easy to see and quick to understand manner. Everything from changing radio stations to finding information on the displays is dead simple. Even actions like folding the rear seats are done with ease. As a result, living with the CR-V is stress free.

The CR-V has a lot of family friendly touches, including a spacious rear-seating area. Rear passenger space is plentiful and goes well with the CR-V’s comfortable seats and nice, big windows. Front passengers also have a handy convex mirror to check on the back seat – making the CR-V ideal for young families.

Thanks for the great review, Patrick!

"It was around 6:30pm, Sunday night, the dealer was closed.  The salesman, Herb was locking up.  I asked to use the restroom, and told him we were looking for a car.  He smiled and let us in. I told him my parameters, how I would be driving the car, etc.  He led me to the Honda Civic. Long story short we bought the Civic!" -Patrick H.

Honda giving away free Civics in Forza Horizon to celebrate launch

Just a friendly reminder from Honda: The Honda Challenge Pack DLC is now available for Forza Horizon. To reward you for the trouble of pressing a few buttons on your Xbox controller, you'll get the 2013 Honda Civic Coupe, an HPD Rally Fit and a 1986 Honda Civic Si Coupe in your garage, and you'll get them free. The event of the new DLC has also kicked off a photo contest that will reward someone with an Xbox 360 console wrapped in a Honda Civic Si theme.

Otherwise, the word "Challenge" keeps coming up because of the chance to run an online race against IndyCar driver Scott Dixon. The track for that digital throwdown has already been decided by Xbox players who voted before January 8. Yet it's not too late to hop into the Honda section in Xbox Live and lay down a time fast enough for a shot at the title "The Driver That Shellacked Scott Dixon," and meeting the man in person.

Honda Urban SUV Concept leaks out ahead of Detroit debut

Next up on the 2013 Detroit Auto Show embargo-break-a-palooza: the Honda Urban SUV Concept. Thanks to Indian Autos Blog, we now have the first press shots of the small crossover concept – a vehicle that will someday make it to production, riding on the Honda Fit platform.

It may have some big features – namely, the large headlamps, big wheels, and bold body lines – but the Urban SUV Concept will compete with smaller vehicles like the Nissan Juke or Fiat 500L. Indian Autos Blog reports that both 1.6- an 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines are being speculated for use in the production model, as well as a diesel powerplant for foreign markets.
