The 2013 Honda Accord Countdown: 19 Days! Today's 2013 Honda Accord Daily Data: Style Meets Substance

Style Meets Substance.

The all-new Accord takes Honda’s exterior styling in a fresh, athletic direction.

Accord has always been known for delivering the virtues that owners are after – things like comfort, roominess, features and proven value. With the arrival of the all-new Accord, though, those virtues are wrapped in athletic and expressive new styling.

Accord Sedan’s body sides are dramatic, with a character line flowing upward and rearward across the door surfaces, and a deep contour strategically positioned at the lower door panels. Bright window-surround trim adds a luxury feel, while in back, the tops of the rear fenders curve inward toward the C-pillars like flexed muscles. The EX-L and Touring models offer chrome door handles and additional trim on the rear panel for added elegance.

To give the cabin an open, airy feel for both front and rear passengers, Accord has a relatively low beltline, large glass area and thin A-pillars.

The new Accord Coupe is the most dramatic 2-door Accord yet. Its front end is set apart with a large lower radiator opening. The large front wheel arches flow into deep character lines that sweep across the doors and back to the muscular rear wheel arches, while the flowing roofline draws the eye up and over the windswept cabin.

Careful sculpting on the lower door sides helps to direct airflow around the rear tires. The roofline, body side character lines and rear wheel arches all converge at the deck-lid, drawing the eye to the rear spoiler on the V-6 models.

For customers, the newfound style gives Accord an added dimension.

The 2013 Honda Accord Countdown: 20 Days! Today's 2013 Honda Accord Daily Data: Just Picture It (Standard Rearview Camera)

Just Picture It.

Every 2013 Accord has a standard rearview camera to help take the guesswork out of backing up.

Rearview cameras are already standard on Honda’s trucks and SUVs. Now with the 2013 Accord, they’re coming to the Honda passenger-car line, too. Accord has a single-view camera, while EX-L and higher models have a multi-angle rearview camera like the one on CR-V.

When you’re maneuvering in tight quarters, a rearward view is priceless. And in the new Accord, it’s standard.

The 2013 Honda Accord Countdown Begins: 21 Days! In the meantime, we will be providing daily information regarding this highly anticipated release direct from Honda, beginning with: More Is Better

More Is Better.

The 2013 Accord 4-cylinder has over 177 lb.-ft. of torque – more than the 2012 Camry or 2012 Malibu 4-cylinder engines offer.

The midsize sedan field is pretty competitive, so it’s nice to come out of the gate with an advantage drivers will enjoy day in and day out. Accord’s Earth Dreams™ direct-injected engine offers spectacular fuel efficiency coupled with much stronger torque than the previous-generation engine – a whopping 16 lb.-ft. increase. And that great torque is right in the rpm operating range you’ll often experience in typical driving. That means confident merging and easy passing.

2013 Honda Accord production fires up with Earth Dreams power

By Jonathon Ramsey  l Posted Aug 20th 2012 4:02PM

01-2013-honda-accord-sedan

"Production of the "Earth Dreams" powertrains that will slot into the 2013 Honda Accord got underway at the Japanese automaker's Anna Engine and Honda Transmission Mfg. plants last week, and both facilities have begun feeding engines and gearboxes to the Marysville, Ohio, assembly lines where the 2013 Accord has started rolling off the lines. A ceremony marking the start of the new generation's assembly today also served to celebrate Honda's 30 years of production in the States.

As one would expect with car as important to Honda as the ninth-generation Accord, the company has made a huge investment in the North American debut of its new direct-injected, 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a new CVT transmission and a 3.5-liter V6 and its optional six-speed automatic. Honda has spent $220 million on expansions, casting operations and automated lines for its associates, and the plant is now able to make 1.8 million Earth Dreams engines annually.

The new engines are said to be good for a 10-percent improvement in fuel economy compared to current offerings, and the powerplants will eventually migrate to other models in Honda's lineup. Check out the press releases below for more information"

Should Honda Build a 2013 Honda Accord Convertible?

Rumors Suggest Honda Might Get Back Into the Convertible Game

By Ed Hellwig, Editor | Published Aug 21, 2012

2013_honda_accord_f34_fe_817121_717
"When the 2013 Honda Accord was revealed a few weeks ago it got us thinking. The Accord has been one of the best-selling models in America for years, yet Honda has been hesitant to expand the model lineup beyond the basic coupe and sedan. Sure, there was the original hatchback, a wagon in the early '90s and even the recent Accord Crosstour experiment. But what about something a little more interesting? Something that might inject some life into Honda when it needs it the most? What about a 2013 Honda Accord Convertible?

With that in mind we asked some of our industry sources if such a vehicle had been considered for the latest Accord lineup. Sure enough, they said there was some internal discussion about just such a car. But as far as they could tell, that's about as far as the convertible got.

In fact, when we asked a Honda official if any Accord convertible prototypes existed, he responded with a light-hearted, "Yes! And the really cool thing about them is that at speeds over 60 mph, the wheels retract and high-efficiency jets pop out." We took that as a no, and he confirmed that rumors about such prototypes are "purely fictional."

The idea stuck in our heads, though, so our in-house Photoshop artist created a couple renderings of what an Accord convertible would look like. The result is an attractive look for the new Accord, with clean lines and a refined shape that convertible buyers in this category would likely find enticing.

And let's face it, the category is ripe for the taking. Consider what a Honda Accord convertible would be up against. The Camaro and Mustang convertibles are most often considered performance cars or kids convertibles, while the Chrysler 200 is either a rental car or an old person's car depending on whom you ask. Sure, there are more refined drop tops for more money (G37, Lexus IS 250 C, etc.) but an Accord convertible would appeal to those looking to have a little fun without appearing like they cashed out of their kids' college funds to do it.

Seems reasonable to us. Then again, we don't have to engineer the thing, but a basic soft-top mechanism shouldn't be that hard to work up. Honda did a fine job with the S2000's lid. Speaking of which, that car has been out of production for a few years, so it's high time Honda gets back into the convertible game once again. What do you think? Would this convertible be a good addition to the Accord family"

Honda Offers a Peek at '13 Accord

3:01 p.m., Aug. 14, 2012

2013accordpeek
AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

"The redesigned 2013 Honda Accord that goes on sale this fall will be shorter and will get a new engine family and a continuously variable transmission – huge changes for a car that has slipped against its midsized sedan rivals.

Honda released the first images of the production version of the Accord sedan and coupe last week but provided few new details about the models.

The two photos released show door sculpting and a rear-window kink at the C-pillar that resemble the styling of BMW's latest 3-Series. But the front and rear fascias clearly signal a Honda.

The car's wheelbase will remain the same, but its overall length will shrink. Still, Honda says the 2013 Accord will offer more passenger and cargo room than the outgoing car.

Honda needs the Accord to be a hit. It used to be a solid No. 2 behind the Toyota Camry among cars in the United States. But the Nissan Altima is close on the Accord's heels, albeit with hefty fleet sales. And the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu have taken retail market share from Honda.

Meanwhile, Honda's interest-rate and lease incentives have soared as high as $4,500 per unit during the sell-down of the outgoing Accord, according to TrueCar.

Along with sportier styling, the 2013 Accord introduces new technology for Honda. The new Earth Dreams engines offer improved output and fuel economy and lower emissions. They have direct injection and double overhead cams.

The base engine will be a 2.4-liter inline-four with more than 181 horsepower and 177 foot-pounds of torque. That means a slight horsepower increase over the outgoing base model, but considerably more torque, with at least 10 percent better fuel economy, Honda engineers have said.

All four-cylinder versions of the Accord with an automatic transmission will have a CVT. The decision could prove to be a gamble because CVTs have not been widely accepted by American buyers and have had reliability problems in some vehicles.

But maybe the biggest question looming – in an era of cost-cutting necessitated by the strong Japanese yen – is what the Accord looks like inside. A repeat of the current Civic's overly plastic interior will not sit well with U.S. customers.

Honda did not release images of the 2013 Accord's interior, but Honda sources say the cabin is an improvement from the current generation."

Honda Leads U.S. Auto Sales Gains as Toyota Extends Rebound

Hondalogo

"Honda Motor Co.’s U.S. sales recovery accelerated in July with the market’s biggest volume gain, helping automakers stay on pace for their best year since 2007.

Honda, Japan’s third-largest carmaker, posted an increase of 45 percent, beating the 41 percent average of eight analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales advanced 26 percent at Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), which like Honda saw deliveries plunge after natural disasters cut parts supplies a year ago, and 16 percent at Nissan Motor Co. Toyota and Nissan also exceeded estimates.

“It really shows how loyal Honda buyers are -- more loyal than we gave them credit for,” said Jesse Toprak, an analyst at TrueCar.com, an automotive pricing and data company in Santa Monica, California. “Not only is Honda winning back market share, they’re doing it faster than anyone expected.”

Sales of new cars and trucks, a bright spot amid a tepid U.S. economic recovery, grew 8.9 percent in July to 1.15 million units, researcher Autodata Corp. said yesterday. The improvement, buoyed by gains for Japan’s Toyota, Honda and Nissan, keeps the industry headed for annual deliveries of more than 14 million, the most in five years.

Hyundai Motor Co. (005380), among the fastest-growing brands in the U.S. during the past three years, reported a 4.1 percent sales increase, while affiliate Kia Motors Corp. (000270)’s rose 5.6 percent. The combined 4.8 percent gain for the two, which operate separately, beat six analysts’ average estimate of a 0.9 percent increase."
